Grangemouth Ladies kicked off their 2009 season away from home at Morgan in Dundee. The Glensburgh side saw a senior debut for Claire Allan, and Mairi Forsyth finally taking up her rightful place in the front row after coming of age.
Morgan stamped their authority on the game quickly with a score under the posts. Grangemouth were quick to reply with the first of Mairi Forsyths tries, in a fashion that was to be mirrored through out the game. It was tit for tat in scores until Mogan scored 2 converted tries just before half time to go ahead.
The second half continued to be a physical encounter with firstly Corrie Malcolm being on the receiving end of a hair pulling incident which resulted in Morgan's 9 being yellow carded. Before Grangemoth could capitilise on this advantage Susan Ferguson was bundled into touch millimetres from scoring with a particularly dangerous tackle which had the crowd demanding a penalty try. This was not to be given and Ferguson retired injured equalising the player numbers again.
Morgan's 9 returned to the pitch and quickly this extra player resulted in another Morgan score, Ferguson also returned to the pitch and Grangemouth again scored through Mairi Forsyth and sister Jemma Forsyth. Some great defence from Kirsty McGrellis and Jen Simpson continued to prevent Morgan scoring but unfortunatelt Ferguson had to retire again and the strong running of the Morgan number 13 played havoc with Grangemouths lack of numbers and further scores were inevitable.
Grangemouths set piece dominated, especially the scrum resulting in it going uncontested as the Morgan scrum began to crumble and could not contain the pressure.
Grangemouth continued to pressurize and a further score by Mairi Forsyth brought up her hatrick and a dream debut for Allan as she scored in the corner to have the final try of the game and earning her man of the match.
It was an unfortunate first loss for the Grangemouth Ladies but scoring 5 tries is a great achievement and a positive start to the season.
